SECTION 1610 - WALLS AND STRUCTURAL FRAMING

1610.1 General. Walls and structural framing shall be erected true and plumb in accordance with the design.

1610.2 Interior Walls. Interior walls, permanent partitions and temporary partitions which exceed 6 feet (1828 mm) in height shall be designed to resist all loads to which they are subjected but not less than a force of 5 pounds per square foot (0.24 kN/) applied perpendicular to the walls. The deflection of such walls under a load of 5 pounds per square foot (0.24 kN/) shall not exceed 1/240 of the span for walls with brittle finishes and 1/120 of the span for walls with flexible finishes. See Table 16-O for earthquake design requirements where such requirements are more restrictive.

EXCEPTION: Flexible, folding or portable partitions are not required to meet the load and deflection criteria but must be anchored to the supporting structure to meet the provisions of this code.
